Can an OT diagnose sensory processing disorder?

No, an occupational therapist cannot diagnose sensory processing disorder. A diagnosis must come from a paediatrician, child psychiatrist, or psychologist who has assessed your child.

Full answer

Occupational therapists play an important role in understanding how your child processes sensory information, but they cannot provide a formal diagnosis. Sensory processing disorder (SPD) is not recognised in the DSM-5 (the diagnostic manual used by mental health professionals), which means there is no formal diagnostic code for it in Australia. Instead, OTs use standardised sensory assessment tools—such as the Sensory Profile 2 or Dunn's Sensory Processing Scale—to describe your child's sensory patterns and how these affect their daily functioning. These assessments help identify whether your child has sensory sensitivities, avoidance, or seeking behaviours across different areas like touch, sound, movement, and taste.

If you're concerned about your child's sensory processing, start by speaking with your GP or paediatrician. They can refer your child to a psychologist or psychiatrist for formal assessment and diagnosis of any underlying conditions. Your GP can also refer your child to an occupational therapist under Medicare (via a GP referral for up to 10 sessions per calendar year, with a rebate of around $70–$90 per session depending on your Medicare rebate category). An OT will then work with you to understand your child's sensory needs and develop strategies to support them at home and school.

If your child has a confirmed disability and you're an NDIS participant, occupational therapy is a commonly funded support. The 2025–26 NDIS Pricing Arrangements list OT services at around $80–$120 per hour depending on your location and the OT's experience level.

OTs are registered with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), and their role is to assess functional abilities and recommend practical strategies—not to diagnose conditions. Working together with your child's GP, paediatrician, or psychologist ensures your child gets the right support across all areas of their development.

⚠ OTs cannot diagnose this condition. Speak with your GP about the correct referral pathway.
