Services Active Eight offers for early intervention

Early childhood development relies on a child's ability to process and respond to sensory information from their environment. At Active Eight, our occupational therapists support children with sensory processing difficulties through tailored activities designed to help them organise and interpret sensory input more effectively. Sensory processing work might include using a sensory swing to help develop body awareness and balance, working with weighted equipment like lap pads or vests to provide calming input, or engaging in fine-motor activities such as threading, playdough manipulation, and hand-strengthening exercises that build foundational skills for writing and self-care. These interventions are woven into play-based sessions that feel natural and enjoyable for young children. Active Eight recognises that early intervention can make a meaningful difference in a child's development trajectory. If your child may be eligible for NDIS support in 2025-26, our team can discuss how funding might assist with ongoing therapy. We encourage parents to speak with their GP or early childhood educator if they have concerns, as occupational therapists cannot diagnose conditions like autism or sensory processing disorder—but we can certainly help address the functional challenges a child experiences.

About early intervention

Early childhood is a time of rapid development across play, movement, communication, self-care, and social skills. When concerns about a child's early development arise, paediatric occupational therapy is one of the allied health supports often involved.

Common questions

How do I know if my child needs sensory processing support?

Children with sensory processing difficulties may seem unusually sensitive to sounds, textures, or movement, or conversely, may seek out intense sensory input. You might notice challenges with transitions, self-care routines, or play skills. If you're concerned, chat with your GP, early childhood educator, or contact Active Eight for an initial discussion about whether an occupational therapy assessment could help.

Can occupational therapy diagnose autism or sensory processing disorder?

No, occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism, ADHD, or sensory processing disorder. However, we can assess how sensory and motor difficulties affect your child's daily functioning and development. If diagnosis is needed, your GP can refer you to a paediatrician or developmental specialist alongside occupational therapy support.

Does Active Eight accept NDIS funding?

NDIS registration status is currently being confirmed. We recommend contacting Active Eight directly to discuss your child's needs and any funding options available. Our team can also guide you through the process if your child is eligible for NDIS support in 2025-26.
