Embrace Neurodiversity

At a child’s first paediatric occupational therapy session, the therapist usually starts by asking about daily routines, strengths, concerns, and what your family would like to make easier. They may observe play, movement, fine motor tasks, sensory responses, self-care, school participation, or how your child approaches everyday activities. First appointments often run for about 45 to 90 minutes, although this varies by clinic and assessment type. Bring relevant reports, NDIS plan details if applicable, school or childcare notes, and examples of what you are noticing at home. After the appointment, the therapist may explain early observations, discuss whether more assessment is needed, and outline possible goals or strategies for home and education settings.
