Autism Support at Kids Play — Across QLD
Kids Play in Across QLD lists services that overlap with paediatric occupational therapy for autism.
Services Kids Play offers for autism
Kids Play supports children with autism spectrum disorder by addressing the sensory and developmental needs that often accompany an autism diagnosis. Our occupational therapy team works with each child to develop skills in everyday activities, manage sensory sensitivities, and build confidence in social and play situations. Through our autism and sensory processing services, we use tailored interventions such as sensory diet activities (including work with weighted blankets and fidget tools), structured play-based learning, and visual supports to help children navigate their environment more comfortably. For example, a child who finds certain textures overwhelming might work with our therapists using graded sensory exposure activities, whilst another may benefit from fine-motor exercises disguised as engaging games to build pencil grip and handwriting skills. Kids Play recognises that many children with autism benefit from predictable routines and clear communication, so we incorporate visual schedules and social stories into our sessions. If you're considering NDIS funding to support your child's therapy, our team can discuss how occupational therapy services may be covered under the 2025–26 funding arrangements. Please note that occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism; however, we work collaboratively with your child's medical team to provide targeted support for the challenges they experience.

About autism
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental difference that shapes how children process information, communicate, and respond to their sensory environment. In Australia, autism is identified across a wide range of ages, and many families first speak with a GP or paediatrician about referrals for assessment after noticing differences in play, communication, sensory responses, or daily routines.

Common questions
Can an occupational therapist diagnose autism?
No, occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism spectrum disorder. However, Kids Play's OTs work closely with your child's GP, paediatrician, or psychologist to understand their needs and provide targeted support for sensory, motor, and daily living skills. We focus on helping your child develop confidence and independence in activities that matter to your family.
How can Kids Play help my child with sensory sensitivities?
Many children with autism experience sensory sensitivities. Our occupational therapists assess how your child responds to different sensations and create a personalised sensory diet—activities and strategies tailored to their needs. This might include calming activities, movement breaks, or gradual exposure to challenging sensations in a safe, supportive environment.
Can we use NDIS funding for therapy at Kids Play?
We recommend discussing NDIS funding options with our team. Occupational therapy services may be eligible for support under NDIS plans for 2025–26, depending on your child's plan and goals. Contact Kids Play to explore how we can work with your funding arrangements and support your child's development.
