Children with autism spectrum disorder often experience differences in sensory processing and fine motor development, which can affect daily activities like self-care, play, and learning. At LEAP Centre in Chatswood, our occupational therapists address these areas through tailored interventions. For sensory processing support, we use strategies such as sensory circuits (structured movement sequences), weighted equipment like lap pads or compression vests, and controlled exposure to different textures and sounds to help children regulate their responses. Fine motor work includes activities like threading, scissor skills practice, and hand-strengthening exercises that build confidence with writing and self-feeding. LEAP Centre recognises that every child is unique, and we work collaboratively with families to identify which sensory and motor strategies work best for each individual.
