Sensory processing Support at LEAP Centre — Sydney, NSW
LEAP Centre in Sydney, NSW lists services that overlap with paediatric occupational therapy for sensory processing.
Services LEAP Centre offers for sensory processing
Children with sensory processing difficulties often struggle with how their bodies interpret and respond to sensory information from their environment. LEAP Centre supports these children through two key service areas that work together. Our sensory processing service helps children develop better awareness and regulation of their senses through carefully graded activities—such as work with sensory swings, weighted vests, and tactile exploration stations—tailored to each child's needs. Our fine motor service addresses the coordination and strength challenges that frequently accompany sensory processing difficulties, using activities like threading, scissor work, and hand-strengthening exercises. At LEAP Centre, we recognise that sensory and motor skills are interconnected; a child struggling with touch sensitivity may also find fine motor tasks challenging. Many families access our services through NDIS funding (2025-26 rates), though we recommend confirming your child's eligibility and support plan with the NDIA. An occupational therapist cannot diagnose sensory processing disorder, autism, or ADHD—these require medical assessment—but we can identify sensory and motor concerns and support your child's development in these areas.

About sensory processing
Sensory Processing Disorder is the term often used by families and clinicians to describe difficulties with how a child's brain interprets and responds to sensory information. This can affect how a child manages sound, touch, movement, sights, smells, tastes, and body awareness.

Common questions
How do I know if my child has sensory processing disorder?
Sensory processing concerns can show as avoiding certain textures or sounds, seeking intense sensory input, clumsiness, or difficulty with transitions. However, occupational therapists cannot diagnose sensory processing disorder—this requires assessment by a paediatrician or psychologist. LEAP Centre can identify sensory and motor difficulties and support your child's development. If you're concerned, speak with your GP about a referral for formal assessment.
Will LEAP Centre accept my child's NDIS plan?
LEAP Centre's NDIS registration status is not yet confirmed. We recommend contacting the clinic directly to discuss your child's plan and whether our services can be funded through your NDIS supports. The NDIA can also advise which providers in your area are registered for sensory processing and fine motor services under 2025-26 funding arrangements.
What should I expect during my child's first visit to LEAP Centre?
Your occupational therapist will gather information about your child's sensory and motor concerns, observe how they interact with activities, and discuss your goals. They'll explain how sensory processing and fine motor skills connect to everyday activities like dressing, eating, and play. You'll receive recommendations for activities to support at home alongside clinic sessions.
