Services More Than Able Therapy offers for developmental delay

Developmental delay can affect how children acquire skills across many areas of everyday life. More Than Able Therapy supports children experiencing developmental delay through targeted fine motor intervention, which helps build the hand strength, coordination and control needed for activities like writing, fastening buttons, using cutlery and manipulating small objects. Our occupational therapists work with children using graded activities tailored to their current abilities—for example, threading beads or pegs to develop finger dexterity, using adaptive scissors and pencil grips to improve writing posture, and engaging in hand-strengthening games with playdough or resistance tools. These interventions are delivered in a supportive, play-based environment that keeps children engaged whilst building confidence. More Than Able Therapy can discuss how NDIS funding (2025-26 pricing arrangements) may support your child's therapy goals if you're an NDIS participant. Whether your child accesses services through NDIS or privately, our team works collaboratively with families and other professionals to identify meaningful goals and monitor progress over time.

About developmental delay

Developmental delay describes when a child has not yet reached one or more developmental milestones in the expected timeframe. It is a description, not a single diagnosis.

Common questions

How do I know if my child has developmental delay?

Developmental delay is typically identified when a child is not meeting expected milestones in areas like fine motor skills, gross motor skills, communication or self-care. Your GP, early childhood educator or paediatrician can raise concerns and refer for assessment. An occupational therapist can evaluate your child's functional abilities and discuss findings with you, though OTs do not diagnose conditions—that's a medical role.

What can I expect during fine motor therapy at More Than Able Therapy?

Sessions are tailored to your child's interests and needs. Your occupational therapist will use play-based activities, hands-on practice and strategies to build skills like pencil grip, hand strength and coordination. You'll receive guidance on activities to practise at home. Progress is monitored regularly, and goals are adjusted as your child develops.

Can my child access therapy through the NDIS?

If your child is an NDIS participant with funding for occupational therapy, More Than Able Therapy can discuss how to use those supports. If you're not yet an NDIS participant, our team can also provide private therapy. We recommend contacting us to discuss your child's situation and funding options.
