Developmental delay Support at Steps2Life — Across NSW
Steps2Life in Across NSW lists services that overlap with paediatric occupational therapy for developmental delay.
Services Steps2Life offers for developmental delay
Steps2Life provides early intervention services designed to support children with developmental delay by addressing key areas such as fine and gross motor skills, self-care abilities, and play development. Early intervention focuses on identifying and addressing delays during critical developmental periods, when children's brains are most responsive to learning. At Steps2Life, occupational therapists work with children through play-based activities tailored to their individual needs. Examples include fine-motor exercises using threading, puzzles, and scissor work to build hand strength and coordination; gross-motor activities like obstacle courses and balance work on therapy equipment to develop body awareness and movement control; and structured play routines that encourage social interaction and communication. The clinic also supports families by providing strategies and activities to incorporate into daily routines at home, maximising learning opportunities throughout the week. Many families access Steps2Life services through NDIS funding (2025-26 pricing arrangements), which can cover occupational therapy support for eligible children. Early intervention with an experienced occupational therapist can help children develop foundational skills and confidence, setting a positive trajectory for school readiness and ongoing development.

About developmental delay
Developmental delay describes when a child has not yet reached one or more developmental milestones in the expected timeframe. It is a description, not a single diagnosis.

Common questions
How do I know if my child has developmental delay?
Developmental delay can present differently in each child. Common signs include slower achievement of milestones (sitting, walking, talking), difficulty with fine-motor tasks like feeding or drawing, challenges with coordination or balance, or difficulty engaging in play. Your GP or early childhood health nurse can provide initial guidance. Steps2Life occupational therapists can assess your child's skills and discuss any concerns during a consultation.
Can occupational therapy diagnose autism or ADHD?
Occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism, ADHD, or sensory processing difficulties—these require assessment by a paediatrician or psychologist. However, Steps2Life occupational therapists can identify functional difficulties with motor skills, self-care, and play, and provide targeted support regardless of diagnosis. We work collaboratively with other professionals involved in your child's care.
How can I access Steps2Life services through NDIS?
If your child is NDIS-eligible, occupational therapy services may be funded through your plan. Contact Steps2Life directly to discuss your child's needs and funding options. We can guide you through the process and explain how early intervention services are structured. NDIS pricing for 2025-26 applies to eligible participants with approved therapy budgets.
