Autism Support at Thinkahead — Across NSW
Thinkahead in Across NSW lists services that overlap with paediatric occupational therapy for autism.
Services Thinkahead offers for autism
Children with autism spectrum disorder often experience differences in how they process sensory information and develop fine motor skills, which can affect daily activities like eating, writing, and self-care. At Thinkahead, our occupational therapists address these areas through tailored interventions. Sensory processing support helps children regulate their responses to sights, sounds, textures and movement—for example, using sensory swings or weighted equipment to help calm an over-stimulated nervous system, or introducing graded exposure to textures during play-based activities. Fine motor work focuses on hand strength and coordination needed for tasks like holding cutlery, fastening buttons, or pencil control, often through engaging activities such as threading, scissor work, and manipulation games. Thinkahead recognises that each child's needs are unique, and therapy is individualised accordingly. Many families access our services through NDIS funding (2025-26 pricing structures apply), which can cover occupational therapy support. We work collaboratively with families and other professionals to support your child's participation in school, home and community activities. Please note that occupational therapists do not diagnose autism spectrum disorder; diagnosis is made by medical professionals.

About autism
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental difference that shapes how children process information, communicate, and respond to their sensory environment. In Australia, autism is identified across a wide range of ages, and many families first speak with a GP or paediatrician about referrals for assessment after noticing differences in play, communication, sensory responses, or daily routines.

Common questions
Can occupational therapy help my child with autism?
Occupational therapy can support children with autism by addressing sensory processing differences and fine motor challenges that may affect daily activities. An OT cannot diagnose autism, but can work with your child to develop skills in self-care, play, and learning. Thinkahead offers individualised therapy tailored to your child's specific needs and goals.
What does a typical session at Thinkahead involve?
Sessions are individualised based on your child's needs. They may include sensory activities (like using swings or textured materials), fine motor exercises (threading, cutting, drawing), and play-based learning. Your therapist will discuss goals with you and adapt activities to keep your child engaged and motivated.
Can I use NDIS funding for therapy at Thinkahead?
Many families use NDIS funding to access occupational therapy services. We recommend checking your NDIS plan to see if occupational therapy is included and contacting Thinkahead directly to discuss funding options and how we can support your child's goals within the 2025-26 pricing framework.
