Handwriting Support at Kids Can! OT — Across QLD
Kids Can! OT in Across QLD lists services that overlap with paediatric occupational therapy for handwriting.
Services Kids Can! OT offers for handwriting
Handwriting difficulties can significantly impact a child's ability to participate in school and daily activities. Kids Can! OT addresses these challenges through two complementary services: handwriting intervention and fine motor development. Our handwriting service focuses on letter formation, pencil grip, writing speed, and the physical stamina needed for sustained writing tasks. Fine motor work builds the underlying hand strength and coordination that handwriting depends on. At Kids Can! OT, we use practical activities tailored to each child's needs—such as threading and bead work to develop finger dexterity, scissor skills practice to strengthen hand muscles, and pencil control exercises using varied grip tools and writing implements. We also incorporate sensory strategies, like using textured paper or weighted pencils, to help children develop better body awareness and control. Many families access our services through NDIS funding (2025–26 pricing applies where eligible), though we work with families using private payment or other funding arrangements as well. Our occupational therapists work collaboratively with schools and families to ensure strategies are reinforced across all environments where your child writes.

About handwriting
Handwriting difficulties are one of the most common reasons families seek paediatric occupational therapy. Writing draws on many skills — fine motor control, posture, visual-motor integration, attention, and the ability to translate ideas into letters on a page.

Common questions
How long does it usually take to see improvement in my child's handwriting?
Progress varies depending on your child's starting point and how consistently strategies are practised. Most children show noticeable improvements within 8–12 weeks of regular intervention, though developing automatic, fluent handwriting takes longer. Kids Can! OT will discuss realistic timeframes during your initial consultation and track progress through regular reviews.
Will the occupational therapist at Kids Can! OT diagnose why my child struggles with handwriting?
Our occupational therapists assess handwriting and fine motor skills to identify specific difficulties and underlying factors affecting performance. However, they cannot diagnose conditions like dysgraphia, autism, or ADHD. If diagnostic assessment is needed, we can discuss referrals to appropriate professionals alongside our therapy support.
Can you help my child if they have NDIS funding?
Kids Can! OT works with families using various funding arrangements. If you have NDIS funding, we can discuss how occupational therapy supports your child's goals. Please note our NDIS registration status is currently being confirmed, so we recommend contacting the clinic directly to discuss your specific funding situation.
