Services Kids Plan-it offers for autism

Kids Plan-it supports children with autism spectrum disorder through three interconnected service areas. Our autism-focused occupational therapy addresses the everyday challenges many autistic children face, including sensory sensitivities and motor skill development. Sensory processing support helps children who may be overwhelmed by sounds, textures, or movement, or conversely, those seeking intense sensory input. We use strategies like sensory diet activities—such as weighted blanket use during transitions, deep pressure hand activities, and controlled exposure to different textures through play. Fine motor intervention targets skills like pencil grip, scissor use, and fastening buttons, which can be particularly challenging for some autistic children. Kids Plan-it designs individualised therapy plans incorporating activities such as threading beads for hand strength, handwriting practice with adaptive pencils, and play-based fine motor games. Many families access our services through NDIS funding (2025-26 pricing structures apply), which can cover occupational therapy support for eligible participants. We work collaboratively with families to identify meaningful goals and create practical strategies for home and school environments. Please note that occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism; however, we support children with diagnosed autism across all these developmental areas.

About autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental difference that shapes how children process information, communicate, and respond to their sensory environment. In Australia, autism is identified across a wide range of ages, and many families first speak with a GP or paediatrician about referrals for assessment after noticing differences in play, communication, sensory responses, or daily routines.

Common questions

Can an occupational therapist diagnose autism?

No, occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism spectrum disorder. Diagnosis requires assessment by a paediatrician, psychologist, or developmental specialist. However, Kids Plan-it can support children with a confirmed autism diagnosis by addressing sensory, motor, and daily living skills that may be affected. We work alongside your child's diagnostic team.

How does Kids Plan-it tailor therapy for my autistic child's sensory needs?

Every child's sensory profile is different. Kids Plan-it conducts detailed assessments to understand whether your child is sensory-seeking or sensory-avoiding. We then create personalised sensory strategies—such as movement breaks, specific textures, or calming activities—integrated into therapy sessions and home routines to support regulation and engagement.

Can I use NDIS funding for Kids Plan-it's autism services?

Many families use NDIS funding for occupational therapy services. Kids Plan-it's NDIS registration status should be confirmed directly with the clinic. If you have an approved NDIS plan with occupational therapy funding, we can discuss how to use those supports. Contact Kids Plan-it to discuss your specific funding arrangements.
