Services Rebound Health offers for fine motor delay

Fine motor skills are essential for children's independence, learning, and confidence. At Rebound Health, our occupational therapists work with children experiencing fine motor delays through targeted handwriting support and tailored intervention strategies. Handwriting therapy addresses the underlying skills needed for pencil control, letter formation, and writing fluency—whether your child struggles with grip strength, hand coordination, or letter recognition. During sessions at Rebound Health, children might engage in activities such as threading beads or using tweezers to build finger strength and dexterity, practising pre-writing patterns and letter formation on textured surfaces to improve motor planning, or using adaptive pencil grips and sloped writing boards to optimise positioning. Our therapists also work with families to embed these strategies into daily routines at home and school. If your child may be eligible for NDIS funding (2025–26), Rebound Health can discuss how therapy costs may be covered through your plan. Every child's needs are unique, and our team takes time to understand what matters most to your family.

About fine motor delay

Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements children use with their hands and fingers for play, self-care, and school. A fine motor skills delay describes when a child is taking longer than expected to develop these skills.

Common questions

How do I know if my child has a fine motor delay?

Signs include difficulty holding a pencil, messy or inconsistent handwriting, avoiding writing tasks, struggling with buttons or zips, or clumsiness with small objects. An occupational therapist can assess your child's skills and identify specific areas needing support. Note that occupational therapists cannot diagnose conditions like autism or ADHD, but can identify functional difficulties and recommend strategies.

What happens during a handwriting session at Rebound Health?

Sessions are tailored to your child's needs and may include warm-up activities to build hand strength, practice with letter formation and pencil control, and strategies to improve posture or grip. Your therapist will also discuss how to support your child's progress at home and liaise with their school when appropriate.

Can NDIS funding help pay for therapy at Rebound Health?

Many children with fine motor delays may be NDIS-eligible. Rebound Health can discuss your situation and how therapy costs might be covered under a 2025–26 plan. We recommend checking your eligibility with the NDIA and discussing funding options with our team during your initial contact.
