Developmental delay Support at TFK — Across NSW
TFK in Across NSW lists services that overlap with paediatric occupational therapy for developmental delay.
Services TFK offers for developmental delay
Developmental delay can affect how children acquire skills across many areas of daily life, including fine motor abilities like holding a pencil, fastening buttons, or using cutlery. TFK supports children experiencing developmental delay through targeted fine motor therapy that builds strength, coordination, and confidence in these essential tasks. During sessions at TFK, children might engage in activities such as threading beads or coins into containers to develop finger dexterity, using adaptive scissors and writing tools to practise cutting and mark-making, or completing puzzles and construction tasks that strengthen hand muscles and planning skills. Our occupational therapists work collaboratively with families to embed these strategies into everyday routines at home and school. If your child may be eligible for NDIS funding in the 2025-26 financial year, TFK can discuss how therapy costs may be covered under your plan. While NDIS registration status is being confirmed, we encourage families to enquire about current funding options and how our fine motor interventions can support your child's development.

About developmental delay
Developmental delay describes when a child has not yet reached one or more developmental milestones in the expected timeframe. It is a description, not a single diagnosis.

Common questions
How do I know if my child has developmental delay?
Developmental delay is identified when children are not meeting expected milestones in areas like fine motor skills, self-care, or play. An occupational therapist cannot diagnose developmental delay, but can assess your child's skills and discuss concerns with you. Your GP or paediatrician can provide formal diagnosis. If you're concerned, speak with your child's early childhood educator or school, or contact your local health service for assessment pathways.
What happens during a fine motor assessment at TFK?
During an initial appointment, our occupational therapist observes how your child uses their hands in play and everyday tasks. We assess grip strength, hand coordination, and ability to manipulate objects. We'll discuss your concerns and goals, then explain what we've noticed and recommend next steps. This helps us create a therapy plan tailored to your child's needs and your family's priorities.
Can NDIS funding cover therapy at TFK?
Many children with developmental delay access therapy through NDIS plans. TFK is exploring registration status, so we recommend contacting us directly to discuss your funding options. If you have an NDIS plan, we can explain how fine motor therapy costs may be covered under 2025-26 arrangements. We're happy to support your funding conversations with the NDIA.
