Autism Support at TOTS — Across QLD

Children with autism spectrum disorder often experience differences in how they process sensory information, which can affect their daily activities, learning, and social participation. TOTS supports these children through specialised sensory processing services designed to help them better understand and respond to sensory input from their environment. Our occupational therapists work with each child to identify their sensory preferences and challenges, then develop tailored strategies and activities to support their engagement at home, school, and in the community. Examples of interventions at TOTS include sensory circuit activities that combine movement and proprioceptive input (such as jumping, pushing, and climbing), use of weighted equipment like lap pads or vests to provide calming input, and structured play activities that gradually expose children to different textures, sounds, and visual stimuli in a controlled way. We also help families understand their child's sensory needs and suggest practical modifications to their environment. Many families access TOTS services through NDIS funding, and we can discuss how your child's plan might support occupational therapy. While occupational therapists cannot diagnose autism or sensory processing differences, we work collaboratively with your child's other healthcare providers to support their overall development and participation.
