Services KidsPoint offers for early intervention

Early childhood is a critical period for developing sensory processing skills, which form the foundation for learning, play, and everyday activities. At KidsPoint, our occupational therapists support children whose sensory systems may need help to process touch, movement, sound, and visual information effectively. Through tailored sensory processing interventions, we help children develop better body awareness and confidence in their environment. Examples of activities used at KidsPoint include sensory swing work to improve vestibular (balance and movement) processing, use of weighted equipment to enhance proprioceptive feedback, and structured play activities that gradually expose children to different textures and sounds. These interventions are designed to help children engage more comfortably with their surroundings and participate in everyday routines like mealtimes, dressing, and social play. If your child may be eligible for NDIS funding in 2025–26, KidsPoint can work with you to support your child's development goals. Please note that occupational therapists do not diagnose conditions such as autism or sensory processing disorder; however, we can identify sensory needs and provide practical strategies to support your child's growth.

About early intervention

Early childhood is a time of rapid development across play, movement, communication, self-care, and social skills. When concerns about a child's early development arise, paediatric occupational therapy is one of the allied health supports often involved.

Common questions

How do I know if my child has sensory processing difficulties?

Children with sensory processing challenges may avoid certain textures or sounds, seem clumsy, struggle with transitions, or seek intense movement or touch. Common signs include difficulty with mealtimes, getting dressed, or playing with peers. An occupational therapist at KidsPoint can observe your child and discuss your concerns, though we cannot diagnose conditions. Your GP or paediatrician can help with formal assessment if needed.

Can KidsPoint help if my child is on an NDIS plan?

KidsPoint supports families accessing NDIS funding. We can work with you to align our sensory processing interventions with your child's NDIS goals and funding arrangements for 2025–26. We recommend confirming our registration status and discussing funding eligibility with the NDIS directly, as registration details may vary.

What happens during a sensory processing session at KidsPoint?

Sessions are play-based and tailored to your child's needs. We might use swings, weighted items, textured materials, or movement activities to help your child's sensory system work more smoothly. We also teach you strategies to use at home so progress continues in everyday routines like bath time and mealtimes.
